Max Merritt And The Meteors is one of New Zealand's earliest Rock'n'Roll bands, formed in 1956 in Christchurch by a 15-year-old. They gained recognition playing for US servicemen during Operation Deep Freeze. In 1959, they signed with HMV and recorded an album before moving to Zodiac and Viking. Their early recordings have inspired several generations of New Zealand garage bands and are often compiled. Over their 40-year career, they have recorded for at least a dozen labels and toured globally. By the mid-seventies, Max had become a superstar in Australia and New Zealand. Many of Australasia's most famous musicians have been part of the band's lineup. Despite facing some health issues, they continued to perform as of 2007.
