Max Roach was an American jazz drummer and bandleader, born on January 10, 1924, in Newland, Pasquotank County, North Carolina. He passed away on August 16, 2007, in Manhattan, New York City, at the age of 83. Roach was a pioneering figure in bebop and one of the most accomplished jazz drummers and percussionists of his time. Throughout his career, he collaborated with many of the greatest jazz musicians and taught at the University of Massachusetts Amherst from 1972 until the mid-1990s. He was also a significant advocate for Afro-American awareness and played an important role in the black civil rights movement. Roach was married several times, including to a singer from 1962 to 1970, and he is survived by five children.
