Maxophone is a progressive rock band from Milan, Italy, formed in 1973 as a six-piece group. Known for their exceptional musicianship and unique assortment of instruments, the band released their self-titled debut album in 1975. Unfortunately, the album arrived too late to compete with the prominent Italian bands of the genre at that time and went largely unnoticed. Released under a label that had few ventures in rock, the album did not achieve the success it deserved due to inadequate production and promotional support. An English-sung version was also produced in an attempt to launch the group internationally, but this was an unsuccessful choice, with the original version generally regarded as superior. Maxophone disbanded after releasing a final single in 1977. However, thirty years later, amidst a resurgence of interest in 1970s Italian prog rock, the band reformed with three original members and went on to release several albums. Prior to the reunion, the sax and flute player had a brief collaboration with another artist at the end of the 1970s.
