Maya Jane Coles is a UK-based music producer, audio engineer, and DJ of British and Japanese descent, born in London. She primarily composes and plays house music under her real name, while her alias Nocturnal Sunshine focuses on dubstep. Additionally, she is part of an electronic dub duo called She Is Danger with Lena Cullen. Maya developed a passion for music in her early teens and began learning music production using Cubase at fifteen, initially producing hip-hop and trip-hop. Her first two records, released on Dogmatik Records in 2008 and 2009, leaned more towards house music. Her breakthrough came in 2010 with the release of a four-track EP on Franck Roger's label, Real Tone Records. DJ Mag recognized her as one of the best newcomers that year, and her track "What They Say" received significant airplay from DJs on Resident Advisor. In 2011, she graced the covers of several specialized magazines, and her rising fame led to an invitation from the BBC to record an Essential Mix, which was later nominated for Essential Mix of the Year 2011. That year, she was also voted ‘Best Newcomer 2011’ at the Ibiza DJ Awards and ranked ninth in Resident Advisor's annual DJ ranking.
