Mazzy Star is a U.S. band based in Santa Monica, California, known for their unique blend of folk, country, and psychedelic rock, and is part of the Paisley Underground movement. The band was formed in 1990 by David Roback, who played guitar and was previously a member of Rainy Day and Rain Parade, and Hope Sandoval, the lead vocalist. Before adopting their current name, they began as Opal in 1989 and recorded a promotional song titled "Ghost Highway." They changed their name to Mazzy Star in 1990 and re-recorded "Ghost Highway" for their debut album. Although the band never officially disbanded, they took a long hiatus between 1997 and 2013. Their last concert took place on March 2, 2019, in Mexico City. Mazzy Star effectively ended following the passing of David Roback in February 2020.
