McCarthy was formed in 1985 in Barking, Essex, England, and consisted of Gary Baker on drums, Malcolm Eden on guitar and vocals, Tim Gane on lead guitar, John Williamson on bass, and Laetitia Sadier on backup vocals toward the end of the group's run. By 1990, frontman Malcolm Eden decided to disband the group after they had released three records and several EPs. Following the disbandment, Malcolm went on to form Herzfeld and eventually retired from the music business. Tim and Laetitia later formed Stereolab.
