Mei Semones is a 23-year-old Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter and guitarist known for her evocative blend of jazz, bossa nova, and indie rock. Her music serves as a means of catharsis and self-expression, as she combines her favorite genres to create something unique and true to her artistic identity. Her debut single, “Wakare no Kotoba,” released under Bayonet Records, showcases her technical guitar skills with plinking tones and asymmetrical time signatures, embodying the complexities of her songwriting. The song, which translates to “parting words,” is an “anti-love song” reflecting on a toxic friendship, enriched by orchestral elements and powerful guitar riffs. Originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Mei began her musical journey at the age of four with piano, later transitioning to electric guitar at eleven. She honed her craft in high school by playing jazz guitar and pursued a degree in guitar performance with a jazz focus at Berklee College of Music, where she met her current bandmates, Noah Leong and Claudius Agrippa. Their contributions with viola and violin add depth to Mei’s intricate guitar work. After moving to New York City and releasing several singles and an EP in 2022, Mei and her band collaborated with post-bossa balladeer John Roseboro and embarked on their first tour with the melodic rock group Raavi.
