The Melvins are a prolific rock/metal band that originated in 1983 in Montesano, WA, before relocating to San Francisco, CA in 1988, and eventually settling in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley. The core members are Roger "Buzz" Osborne, who handles guitar and lead vocals, and Dale, who plays drums, provides vocals, and bass on some releases. Over their 40-year career, the band has had a rotating cast of more than 10 bass players and has released over 20 studio albums. Their current bassist is not specified. The band performs under different names, including "Melvins Lite" with Trevor Dunn on stand-up bass and "Melvins 1983" with Dale on bass instead of drums, referencing the early incarnation of the band from 1983. The name "Melvins" was inspired by a grocery clerk at the Thriftway in Montesano where King Buzzo worked, as Melvin was the most disliked employee, making it an appropriately ridiculous name. Former members include various musicians who played drums and bass in different periods, with some notable names and their respective roles and years of involvement. Additionally, there were several touring members who contributed to the band during specific years.
