Mercedes Sosa, known as La Negra, was an Argentine singer born on July 9, 1935, in San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina. She passed away on October 4, 2009, in Buenos Aires. Sosa was immensely popular throughout Latin America and internationally, with deep roots in Argentine folk music. At the age of fifteen, she won a singing competition organized by a local radio station. In the 1960s, she became one of the leading figures of 'nueva canción' and began touring internationally. Throughout her career, she gave voice to many songs written by Brazilian and Cuban artists and was famously recognized as the 'voice of the voiceless ones.' In 1979, during a concert in La Plata, she was arrested on stage by the military junta, along with the audience. Following this incident, she was banned in her own country and moved to Paris and later to Madrid until her return to Argentina in 1982. Sosa also served as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Latin America and the Caribbean.
