Mercury Rev is an alternative rock band hailing from Buffalo, New York, formed in 1989. Initially, the band started as a collective to create soundtracks for student films. They made their debut in the UK, showcasing a psychedelic and experimental style of indie rock, which gradually evolved into a more melodic and bittersweet sound. The band's frontman, David Baker, departed after their second album, "Boces," and later recorded an album under the name Shady. Mercury Rev gained mainstream attention in 1998 with their album "Deserter's Songs," which received the "Best Album Of The Year" award from NME following extensive touring in the UK. Current members include Jonathan Donahue on vocals and guitar, and Grasshopper (Sean Mackowiak) on guitar and clarinet. Former members comprise David Baker (vocals), Suzanne Thorpe (woodwinds), Jimy Chambers (drums), Dave Friddmann (bass, keyboards, producer), Justin Russo (keyboards), Jason Russo (bass), Adam Snyder (keyboards), Paul Dillon (bass), Jeff Mercel (drums & keyboards), Carlos Anthony Molina (bass), Michael Schirmer (keyboards), Jason Miranda (drums), and Jesse Chandler (flute, keyboards).
