Merle Kilgore was an American songwriter, guitarist, country music entertainer, manager, and actor, born on August 9, 1934, in Chickasha, Oklahoma, and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana. He passed away on February 6, 2005, in Mexico. Kilgore was perhaps best known for his songwriting, having written his first number one hit, "More And More," at the age of 18. He also penned the 10-million selling "Wolverton Mountain" and co-wrote the iconic "Ring Of Fire." In 1964, he began a 21-year tenure as the opening act for Hank Williams Jr., during which he developed a close friendship and took on the role of manager for Williams. An actor and long-time member of the Screen Actors Guild, Kilgore appeared in several films, including "Coal Miner's Daughter" and Robert Altman's "Nashville." In 1993, he was inducted into the Louisiana Hall of Fame in Lafayette, Louisiana.
