Merle Travis was an American country and western singer, songwriter, musician, cartoonist, cinema actor, composer, and guitarist, born on November 29, 1917, in Rosewood, Kentucky. He passed away on October 20, 1983, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Travis was the originator of the "Travis Style" guitar picking, a method akin to piano stride, which was further developed by other guitarists. He acted in the movie "From Here to Eternity" and was a regular on TV's "Hometown Jamboree" and "Town Hall Party." In 1977, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
