Merry Clayton is a soul, gospel, rhythm and blues, and disco singer, as well as an actress, born on December 25, 1948, in Gert Town, New Orleans, Louisiana. She is the wife of a late jazz artist and the sister of a percussionist. Clayton debuted at the age of 14 in 1962 with the duet "Who Can I Count On? (When I Can't Count On You)." Although she recorded "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)," it was another artist's version that became a hit the same year. She was one of the original backing vocalists for The Rolling Stones and provided backing vocals on the debut album of another artist in 1968. Clayton is best known for her duet with Mick Jagger on "Gimme Shelter," an intense performance that gained renewed recognition in the documentary "20 Feet from Stardom," which won both an Oscar and a Grammy. She is also heard in the background of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama." Throughout her career, she has sung backing vocals for various artists, including Ray Charles and Elvis Presley. Her biggest hit is the uptempo "Yes" from the 1987 soundtrack of "Dirty Dancing." Clayton released five solo albums during the 1970s and one in 1994.
