Merzbow (メルツバウ) is an extreme experimental music project founded in Tokyo in 1979 by musician Masami Akita (秋田昌美). Recognized as one of the pioneers of "Japanese noise," Merzbow has released hundreds of recordings since its inception. The project's name is derived from Kurt Schwitters' "Merzbau" and is pronounced the same way. Initially, Merzbow started as a duo, but after Kiyoshi Mizutani left in 1989, it became a solo project of Akita. From 1991, Merzbow was a trio that included Akita, along with members who contributed electronics, voice, and dance. However, since 1999, Merzbow has reverted to being a solo project of Masami Akita.
