Meshell Ndegeocello is an American singer-songwriter, bassist, vocalist, and activist, born on August 29, 1968, in West Berlin, Germany, as Michelle Lynn Johnson. She was raised in Washington, D.C., where she honed her musical skills by playing in go-go bands during the late 1980s. Prior to her debut album, she adopted the surname Ndegeocello, which she states means "free like a bird" in Swahili, and has since started spelling it as Meshell Ndegeocello. She has also used the name Meshell Suhaila Bashir-Shakur. Ndegeocello has been nominated for 10 Grammy Awards (and counting). She is the daughter of "Saxman" Jacques T. Johnson Sr. and has a sister and a daughter.
