Meshell Ndegeocello, born Michelle Lynn Johnson on August 29, 1968, in West Berlin, Germany, is an American singer-songwriter, bassist, vocalist, and activist. Raised in Washington, D.C., she honed her musical skills by performing in go-go bands during the late 1980s. Before releasing her debut album, she adopted the name Me'Shell NdegéOcello, which she states means "free like a bird" in Swahili, and she has since begun spelling it as Meshell Ndegeocello. Additionally, she has used the pseudonym Meshell Suhaila Bashir-Shakur. Ndegeocello has received 10 Grammy Award nominations and counting. She is the daughter of "Saxman" Jacques T. Johnson Sr. and has a sister. She is also a mother.
