Metabolist was a UK experimental group formed in London in 1975. By January 1977, the lineup included Malcolm Lane (guitar, synth, vocals), Simon Millward (bass, vocals, synth), Mark Rowlatt (drums, percussion), and Anton Loach, with Jacqueline Bailey responsible for designing the band's record covers in a Suprematist style. Their sound was characterized by repetitive minimalism influenced by Post-punk and Krautrock, incorporating elements reminiscent of lo-fi Magma-esque passages with prominent bass lines. In the UK press, their music was often compared to other experimental groups such as The Pop Group, Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle, and This Heat, with some reviews labeling them as “a poor man's This Heat.” Despite these comparisons, the band developed a distinct sound with each release, drawing inspiration from continental artists like Can, Gong, and Magma. Metabolist made the decision to avoid major record labels, leading to the release of one full-length LP and several 7” singles and cassettes during their brief career. Their sole album, released in 1980, is regarded as their most complete work, showcasing a rougher edge due to the active participation of each band member in the recording, mixing, and editing processes.
