**Metallica Bio** Metallica is a thrash metal band formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, California. The founding members, vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, met through an ad in a local music newspaper. They initially recorded "Hit The Lights" for a compilation record, featuring lead guitarist Dave Mustaine. After several lineup changes, including the replacement of bassist Ron McGovney with Cliff Burton, the band relocated to San Francisco. Their debut album, "Kill 'Em All," was released in 1983, followed by "Ride The Lightning" in 1984. Metallica signed a major label deal and released "Master Of Puppets" in 1986, which is regarded as one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time. Tragically, bassist Cliff Burton died in a bus accident that same year. Jason Newsted, of Ozzy Osbourne's band, joined as the new bassist, making his debut on the EP "Garage Days Re-Revisited" in 1987. The full-length album "...And Justice For All" followed in 1988, featuring the notable track "One." In 1991, Metallica released their self-titled album, commonly known as "The Black Album," which became one of the best-selling rock albums, with over 16 million copies sold in the US alone.
