Miami Sound Machine is one of the most successful Latin American bands to crossover into the English-language market, paving the way for many other Latin artists. The group was started by bandleader and accordion player Emilio Estefan in 1975 under the name Miami Latin Boys, initially as a weekend job. The name changed to Miami Sound Machine a year later when Emilio invited female singer Gloria Estefan and her cousin to join the band after a well-performed audition on stage. In 1977, they recorded their first album for a local label. Emilio married Gloria a year later. In 1980, CBS signed them to their new Latin American label, and their 1984 disco hit "Dr. Beat" led to a deal with the major CBS label. Throughout its course, the band has undergone many musician changes, and in 1989, they went uncredited when Gloria recorded as a solo artist.
