Michael Bloomfield was born on July 28, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He became a prominent figure in the blues music scene, having played with many of Chicago's blues legends from a young age. Bloomfield was a key influence on the mid-to-late 1960s revival of classic Chicago and other styles of blues music. He passed away on February 15, 1981, in San Francisco, California, due to a drug overdose. In 2003, Bloomfield was ranked number 22 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Unlike his contemporaries Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck, Bloomfield favored a loud but clean sound with a healthy amount of reverb, avoiding extensive use of feedback and distortion. In recognition of his impact on the blues genre and influence on other guitarists, Gibson released a Michael Bloomfield Les Paul, replicating his 1959 Standard model.
