Michael Byron is an American composer and editor of contemporary music anthologies, born in Chicago in 1953. He grew up in Los Angeles, California, where he studied trumpet and began composing at the age of 16. In 1971, he became a pupil of James Tenney and Richard Teitelbaum while studying at CalArts. In 1973, he moved to Ontario, Canada, where he co-founded the performance art group Maple Sugar and taught at York University. In the late 1970s, he relocated to New York City, where his chamber piece "Tidal" premiered in 1980. He continues to live in New York City and compose avant-garde music.
