Michael Gregory Jackson, born on August 28, 1953, in New Haven, CT, is a versatile singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist known for his proficiency in guitar, mandolin, flute, timpani, marimba, percussion, and harmonica. To avoid confusion with the famous singer of the same name, he adopted the name Gregory after the early 1980s. In the mid-1970s, he was active in the free jazz scene, collaborating with various artists and forming the trio Clarity. Over time, Jackson's style evolved to incorporate more commercial elements, blending free-jazz techniques with pop rhythms and song forms. Ultimately, he transitioned away from jazz to pursue a career in pop music.
