Michael Henderson was a prominent bassist, singer/songwriter, producer, and arranger, born on July 7, 1951, in Yazoo City, Mississippi. He passed away on July 19, 2022, in Atlanta, Georgia. Henderson was recognized as one of the first notable bass guitarists of the fusion era and became one of the most influential jazz and soul musicians over the past 40 years. Before his collaboration with Miles Davis, Henderson toured with Stevie Wonder, whom he met while warming up for a gig at the Regal Theater in Chicago. In early 1970, Davis noticed Henderson performing at the Copacabana in New York City and reportedly expressed his intention to take him as his bassist. After nearly seven years with Davis, Henderson shifted his focus to songwriting and singing, embarking on a solo career that yielded numerous hit songs and albums for Buddah Records until his retirement in 1986. Though primarily known for his ballads, he was also an influential funk player whose riffs and songs have been widely covered. Additionally, he is recognized for his vocal contributions on several hits by Norman Connors, including "You Are My Starship" and "Valentine Love," performed with Jean Carn. At the time of his death, Henderson was in a relationship with DaMia Satterfield and had separated from his wife, Adelia Thompson.
