Michael James is known for his contributions as a co-writer and for his friendship with May, with whom he lived nearby. One day, he visited May's house and played a piano ballad he had been developing, titled "Lightning Strikes Twice." This piece was later transferred into Derrick's sequencer, where it remained until Derrick decided to listen to it in its entirety. Intrigued by certain sections, Derrick began to enhance the track by adding beats and strings, leading to a significant moment in Detroit's music history.
