Michio Miyagi (April 7, 1894 - June 25, 1956) was a Japanese composer and koto performer born in Kobe, Japan. He is recognized as the father of modern koto music, having revolutionized the genre with innovative playing and compositional techniques. Throughout his career, Miyagi composed over 350 works, primarily for the koto, including pieces for children and large-scale compositions such as koto concerti with Western orchestras. He also invented the jushichigen, an 80-string koto, as well as the dai-kokyu and tan-goto. Miyagi passed away in Osaka.
