Mickey and the Soul Generation was a soul and funk group formed in San Antonio, Texas, active during the 1960s and 1970s. The band was led by bass player Gilbert Rivera, who worked as a studio engineer for Manny "Mr. G" Guerra and utilized the studio to record with his band during weekends. They released several singles between the late 1960s and early 1970s, with their most notable track being the 1969 hit "Iron Leg." The group gained semi-national attention when Nipsey Russell performed the Iron Leg dance on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson." Despite sharing a label with Ben E. King, they did not have access to the same promotional resources. They toured with prominent acts like Sam & Dave and opened for legends such as James Brown, Kool & the Gang, and The Supremes, performing for large audiences, yet often faced hardships, including sleeping on floors. By the mid-1970s, the group began to fracture, with members pursuing various paths, including military service and starting families. In 1977, two members, Mickey Foster and George Salas, released a single under the band's name, but it went unnoticed. In the early 2000s, DJ Shadow (Josh Davis) rediscovered Mickey and the Soul Generation, leading to the reissue of their recordings on his Cali-Tex label.
