Mickey Dread was a radio disc jockey, studio engineer, singer, and producer born on June 4, 1954, in Port Antonio, Jamaica. He passed away on March 15, 2008, in Stamford, Connecticut, USA. At the age of 12, he began building amplifiers and repairing radios, later studying electronics in Jamaica and the USA. He joined the "Safari" sound system, where he was responsible for repairing amplifiers and turntables. In 1976, Dread joined the Jamaican Broadcasting Corporation (JBC), one of the two major radio stations in Kingston, where he took over the show "Dread at the Control." This show, which aired daily from midnight to 4 am and featured only reggae music, helped him gain fame in Jamaica until 1979. He started recording songs in 1978 and founded his own label, DATC, named after his radio show, releasing his first album in 1979. Dread became popular in England, especially among the Punk crowd, and worked with The Clash, producing the single "Bankrobber" and mixing dub versions for their albums "Black Market Clash" and "Sandinista!" He toured with the band in 1980 and remained productive throughout the 1980s, participating in various projects in the 1990s and 2000s before moving to the USA, where he began reissuing the productions of his label.
