Mickey Hart, born Michael Steven Hartman on September 11, 1943, in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, is an American drummer and percussionist best known for his role in The Grateful Dead. He was a member of the band from September 1967 until February 1971 and again from October 1974 until their final show in July 1995. Hart's mother, Leah, was a bookkeeper and a drummer, while his father, Lenny, was a champion rudimental drummer who ran Hart Music, a business selling drums and musical instruments in San Carlos, California, until 1971. Hart's absence from the Grateful Dead between 1971 and 1974 was due to his father's embezzlement of the band's money. In The Grateful Dead, Hart shared drumming duties with Bill Kreutzmann, and together they were known as "the rhythm devils." Both musicians grew up listening to jazz, and Hart also embraced Latin music early in his career.
