**Bio: Mickey Hawks** Mickey Hawks was born on July 17, 1940, in Thomasville, North Carolina, and passed away on August 15, 1989, in Rockingham, North Carolina. He was a distinctive figure in the fifties rock 'n' roll scene, known for his screaming vocals and thumping piano style. Although he never achieved a national hit, Mickey managed to earn a living from his music until his untimely death at the age of 49. At the age of two, Mickey's family moved to High Point, North Carolina, where he spent the next 25 years before settling in Readsville near the Virginia state line. The fifth of six children, he learned to play the piano from his mother at thirteen. Inspired by Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis, Mickey formed his first band, The Rhythm Rockers, in 1956. In September 1957, he joined The Night Raiders, led by Moon Mullins, who had a local radio show. Mickey wrote the song "Bip Bop Boom," recorded in May 1958, which became most associated with him. The song was released on the Robbins Red label and later on the Mart and Profile labels, selling about 50,000 copies and achieving notable success in Chicago and even reaching #1 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
