Mike Collins was a British guitarist and producer, known for his innovative contributions to the DIY jazz-funk genre. Although his birth date is unknown, he passed away on 12 March 2018 in London, England. Collins gained recognition as a member of a group famous for their influential track "Rude Movements," released in 1983. His music career began in 1981 when he worked as a songwriter-producer, achieving early success with a leading Brit-Funk band. Their track, which he co-produced and co-wrote, sold 40,000 copies and reached #40 on the UK charts in November 1981. In 1983, in collaboration with keyboard player Keith O’Connell, Collins produced the instrumental track "Rude Movements" by Sun Palace. Licensed to various labels, it initially sold around 10,000 vinyl copies and was released globally. The track became a staple at David Mancuso's Loft Parties and significantly influenced DJs, solidifying its status as an early dance music classic. Throughout his career, Collins engaged in production, programming, and session work with various artists and legendary producers, as well as contributing to film soundtracks. He collaborated with a diverse range of musicians, including jazz guitarist, soul artists, Nigerian afrobeat/jazz composers, and Senegalese griot musicians, releasing many tracks on his own label.
