Mikhail Pletnev is a Russian pianist, conductor, and composer born on April 14, 1957, in Arkhangelsk, Soviet Union. He gained international recognition after winning first prize and a gold medal at the VI International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1978, which led to extensive touring worldwide. Pletnev made his conducting debut in 1980 and founded the Russian National Orchestra (RNO) in 1990, marking it as the first non-government-supported orchestra in Russia since 1917, where he served as the first principal conductor. He has lived in Switzerland since 1996 and more recently in Thailand. His name can be transliterated in various ways, including Mikhail Vasilievich Pletnev in English and Michail Wassiljewitsch Pletnjow in German.
