Miles Davis was a renowned trumpeter, bandleader, and composer, born on May 26, 1926, in Alton, Illinois, USA. He passed away on September 28, 1991, in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 65. Davis is recognized as one of the most important figures in jazz history, having adopted multiple musical directions throughout his five-decade career, which kept him at the forefront of major stylistic developments in jazz. His 1959 album is the highest-selling jazz album ever, with over five million copies sold. Davis settled in New York City to study at the Juilliard School and made his professional debut as a member of a band from 1944 to 1948. In 1948, he began forming his own ensembles and met a collaborator who contributed to his scores and arrangements. The recordings they made in 1949-50 were later assembled into the LP released in 1957, with further collaborations occurring from 1957 onward. Davis played a significant role in the creation of the 'Hard Bop' style in the mid-1950s, with his first regular quintet featuring notable musicians.
