Miles Davis Quintet is a name that refers to various formations of the group over the years, primarily recognized through two significant line-ups known as the "Great Quintets." The "First Miles Davis Quintet," or the "First Great Miles Davis Quintet," existed from 1955 to 1958, featuring a core lineup that included trumpet, tenor saxophone, piano, double bass, and drums, with an expansion to a sextet in 1958 by adding an alto saxophone. The "Second Miles Davis Quintet," or the "Second Great Miles Davis Quintet," was active from 1964 to 1969, maintaining a similar lineup of trumpet, tenor saxophone, piano, double bass, and drums. In addition to these notable periods, there were other quintets formed outside these timespans, including the "Lost Quintet," which performed between 1968 and 1970 without recording a studio album. This group included trumpet, tenor and soprano saxophone, piano, bass, and drums. Several albums by these quintets are not credited to the group PAN but should be attributed to the ensemble instead.
