Miriam Makeba, known as "Mama Afrika," was a Grammy Award-winning South African singer born on March 4th, 1932, in Johannesburg. She passed away on November 10th, 2008, in Castel Volturno, Italy. Makeba gained prominence after singing with various artists and landing a role in the musical King Kong in 1959. She later moved to London, where she met a significant figure who invited her to America. Widely regarded as the first lady of South African traditional music, Makeba became an international superstar in the USA and the UK. At one time married to a notable individual, she was eventually able to return to South Africa once the political situation had improved.
