The Misfits are an American horror-themed punk rock band formed in early 1977 in Lodi, New Jersey. The band took their name from Marilyn Monroe's last film and acknowledged the cast on the back of their first record. The founding members included Glenn Danzig on vocals and electric piano, Jerry Caiafa (Jerry Only) on bass, and Manny on drums. Their initial release on their own label, Blank Records, showcased a more brooding and sinister side rather than the typical anger of punk music. Following this, Danzig and Only brought in a new drummer and a guitar player, solidifying their horror-punk direction. The original lineup of the Misfits disbanded in October 1983 after releasing several limited-edition 7" singles and 12" records, which became sought-after collectors' items. Most of their material was released on Glenn's Plan 9 label. After the breakup, Danzig formed a new band called Samhain, while Jerry Only and Doyle stepped away from music to work at their father's company. Between 1986 and 1988, Danzig released unreleased and out-of-print Misfits material, leading to a lawsuit over royalties between him and Only.
