Mittageisen was a Swiss Dark Wave/Post-Punk band formed in 1981. The band was initiated by a member who handled synthesizers, rhythm, and voice/lyrics, following several punk activities, including the production of the first Swiss-Punk LP. The initial lineup also included two other members who played guitar. A few months later, a bass player joined the group, and they recorded a demo tape featuring six songs, some of which were included in their debut album released in 1983. Shortly before the recording sessions for their first album in autumn 1982, one member left the band. Throughout their career, Mittageisen performed various concerts alongside other bands, such as Propaganda, and became one of the most influential Swiss New Wave bands, particularly after the release of their first album in March 1983, which received positive reviews and was recognized as 'record of the week' on Swiss Radio. Their songs gained airplay on multiple radio stations, especially in Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands. After the departure of another guitarist, the band continued with a new synthesizer player and released the 12" single "automaten" in January 1985, showcasing a new electro sound. The band expressed dissatisfaction with the initial studio version of "automaten," prompting one member to travel to Cologne to collaborate on the final mix with producers from Die Hornissen and The Wirtschaftswunder.
