Modern English is an English band formed in Colchester, Essex, in 1977 by Robbie Grey (vocals), Gary McDowell (guitar), and Michael Conroy (bass). Initially known as the Lepers, they gained recognition in the punk scene, playing primarily at parties until they were signed by 4AD. The lineup was later expanded to include Richard Brown (drums) and Stephen Walker (keyboards). By the time of "Stop Start" in 1986, Modern English had left 4AD, and both Walker and Brown departed from the band, with Aaron Davidson (keyboards, guitar) joining the lineup. Robbie Grey briefly returned to England to form a new band but reformed Modern English in 1990 with Davidson and Conroy, releasing "Pillow Lips
