Monguito Santamaría, born in 1950s New York, is the son of an Afro-Cuban conga player. Growing up surrounded by Latin music, he was particularly influenced by Tito Puente's Orchestra, in which his father performed. As a piano player, Monguito recorded a series of LPs in a Latin Soul style for Fania Records starting in the late 1960s.
