Moon Mullican was an American country and western singer, songwriter, and pianist, born on March 29, 1909, near Corrigan, Polk County, Texas. He passed away on January 1, 1967, in Beaumont, Texas. Known as the "King of the Hillbilly Piano Players," Mullican was a key figure in the hillbilly boogie style, which had a significant influence on rockabilly. Raised in a religious family, Mullican began playing hymns on his family's organ and was introduced to country blues by a black sharecropper friend, Joe Jones. By the age of 16, he had developed his piano skills sufficiently to leave home and perform professionally in local clubs in Houston. Between 1937 and 1940, he recorded with various labels, and in 1941, he made several recordings on the same label with an unnamed artist. In 1945, he formed his own band and recorded for a label between 1946 and 1947. Their song "New Pretty Blonde (New Jole Blon)" reached number 2 on the U.S. Country charts. Mullican became one of King's bestselling artists and recorded with that label until 1956, initially as a bandleader and later as a featured artist with an anonymous string band.
