Morgan Geist, born on November 5, 1972, in New Jersey, was initially inspired by England's interpretation of Detroit's sound, eventually tracing techno back to its Motor City roots. His musical journey began with early-'80s synth icons like Devo, Severed Heads, and New Order, alongside influences from early hip-hop, jazz, and 60s Hindi film soundtracks. Geist released his first 12" through Dan Curtin's Metamorphic label while studying at Oberlin College in 1994 and soon after formed his own label, Environ. His debut album came out in 1997 and was licensed to EastWest/Warner. Today, Geist continues to operate Environ and is known as a highly-regarded remixer and producer, both as a solo artist and as half of the duo Metro Area. He has collaborated with a diverse array of artists, including Hugh Masekela, Telex, Erlend Øye, and The Rapture.
