Morgenstern was an American jazz critic and librarian, born on October 24, 1929, in Munich, Germany. He moved to the United States in 1947 and became the New York correspondent for Jazz Journal from 1958 to 1961. He served as editor for Metronome in 1961, Jazz from 1962 to 1963, and Down Beat from 1964 to 1973. In 1976, he became the director of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University. Morgenstern passed away on September 7, 2024, in New York, NY.
