Mort Shuman was an American songwriter and pianist, born on November 12, 1938, in Brooklyn, New York. He passed away on November 2, 1991, in London, England. Shuman gained fame for his collaborations, which produced classics such as "Surrender" and "His Latest Flame," as well as "Save The Last Dance For Me." He wrote and performed many songs in French, achieving significant success in France and other European countries. During a stay in Paris, he met Jacques Brel, whose songs he adapted into English, contributing to the musical "Jacques Brel Is Alive And Well And Living In Paris," alongside Eric Blau. His English adaptations of Brel's works have been performed by numerous artists. In the 1960s, Shuman relocated permanently to Paris, where he enjoyed a successful recording career in French, earning six gold records and creating a popular classic, "Le Lac Majeur." He collaborated frequently with Israeli singer Mike Brant and composed over 20 film scores, primarily for French cinema. Additionally, he appeared in films and continued to write for other artists until his death. Shuman received several honors throughout his career and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010 as a songwriter.
