Mory Kanté (March 29, 1950 – May 22, 2020) was an acclaimed Guinean vocalist and kora harp player, born in Albadariya, Guinea. Coming from one of Guinea's renowned griot families, he was immersed in the Mandinka griot tradition from a young age. At seven, he moved to Mali to learn the kora and important vocal traditions essential for a griot. In 1971, Kanté joined the Rail Band as a singer and became the lead vocalist after Keïta left in 1973. He gained international fame with his 1987 hit song "Yé Ké Yé Ké," which became one of Africa's best-selling hits.
