Moses Dillard is a versatile musician with a career spanning over 20 years, during which he led his own bands and worked as a guitarist in Muscle Shoals. Born in Greenville, SC, he formed his first touring band, the Dynamic Showmen, before turning 20 and achieving local success. Dillard later collaborated with James Moore in a duo named Moses & Joshua, recording hits such as “My Elusive Dreams” and “Get Out of My Heart” for Don Schroeder’s Papa Don Productions in Pensacola, FL, and “Soul Symphony” for Coral in 1968. His guitar skills became prominent while working with Schroeder, as he played sessions for various acts, including James and Bobby Purify, Oscar Toney, Jr., and Mighty Sam, contributing to their late-’60s recordings. In 1970, Dillard returned to Greenville to focus on his own career, forming the group Tex-Town Display, which featured members like Bill Wilson, Peabo Bryson, and James Ivory. Their 1970 hit “I’ve Got to Find a Way” gained significant local airplay, leading to national distribution through Curtom Records, selling 250,000 copies. Although their follow-up single “Our Love Is True” did not perform as well, the group continued to record until disbanding in 1971.
