Moses Mchunu, born in 1953 in Nkandla, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa, is a prominent figure in the neo-traditional Mbaqanga music scene. His music is characterized by infectious and complex four-bar sequences featuring acoustic guitar, vocals, harmonies, strong basslines, drums, and often an accordion or fiddle. Mchunu gained recognition for his hit track "Qhwayilahle," featured on the 1985 album Indestructible Beat of Soweto. His music draws from the roots of the 60s and 70s, reflecting the experiences of lone maskandi musicians who played in the white suburbs and industrial areas of Durban. Mchunu's records, primarily purchased by migrant workers, capture themes of rural traditional African life, including cattle, religion, harvest, and social customs, while subtly navigating the social conditions of apartheid.
