Mother Gong was an offshoot band formed in 1978, initially conceived by Gilli Smyth to promote their musical projects. The band became a collaborative vehicle for Gilli Smyth and Harry Williamson, featuring several distinct line-ups over the next 15 years. In 1991 or 1992, Williamson left, but Smyth continued to use the name until 2006. The band's history can be divided into six distinct periods: 1. **Proto-Mother Gong (1978)**: This initial line-up was assembled to promote an album and included members such as Gilli Smyth, a drummer, a saxophonist, a bassist, François Bessac on guitar, a synth player, Janno on percussion, a keyboardist, and another guitarist. They briefly toured in Spain and the UK in the latter half of 1978. 2. **Mother Gong #2 (1978-1979)**: Based in the USA, this period featured Gilli Smyth, Harry Williamson, and other members. They participated in the first New-York Manifestival in October 1978 and toured the US in Spring 1979, with this phase documented on a recording. 3. **Mother Gong #3 (1979-1980)**: This line-up included Gilli Smyth, Harry Williamson, and others. They recorded an album and performed at the Glastonbury festival in 1979 on the new Pyramid Stage. 4. **Mother Gong #
