Motherlode was a Canadian pop rock group formed in 1969 in London, Ontario. The original lineup included William "Smitty" Smith and other members, and they signed with a label after the massive success of their first single, "When I Die." This single led to Buddah Records signing them for US and international distribution. However, the group split up in January 1970 before the release of their second album, which was the last release featuring the original lineup. Following the split, Revolver owned the name Motherlode and a new lineup was formed in 1970, retaining Smitty. This new lineup included a guitarist, Philip Wilson on drums, and another member on tenor sax and flute. There were two more lineup changes before the band's final single, "All That's Necessary," was released in 1971, which flopped, leading to the retirement of the band name.
