MPB4, short for Música Popular Brasileira 4, is a vocal and instrumental Brazilian group that was formed in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, in 1965 and has remained active since. The group primarily performs sung samba and MPB and is regarded as one of the best vocal interpretation groups in Brazil. The original lineup included Miltinho (Milton Lima dos Santos Filho, b. 1943), Magro (Antônio José Waghabi Filho, 1943-2012), Achilles (Achille Rique Reis, b. 1948), and Ruy Faria (Ruy Alexandre Faria, b. 1937). Initially known as Quarteto do CPC (Centro Popular de Cultura - Popular Culture Center), the band changed its name to MPB-4 following the dissolution of the CPC after the 1964 Brazilian coup d'état. In 2001, MPB-4 celebrated a 36-year career with the same lineup, a feat recognized in the Brazilian edition of the Guinness Book of Records. In 2004, Ruy Faria departed from the group and was succeeded by Dalmo Medeiros (b. 1951), a former member of another band. After Magro's passing in 2012, Paulo Malaguti Pauleira took his place as singer, composer, and arranger.
