Mudkids are a prominent hip-hop group from Indianapolis, Indiana, recognized as one of the most successful acts in the region since the late 1990s. The core members of the group are Russ Johnson, the MC (also known as Rusty, Choc Soreel, Dangeruss, and Rusty Redenbacher), and Tyler Knapp, the DJ (also known as Elp-Mass). Their musical style draws inspiration from old-school pioneers such as Pharcyde, A Tribe Called Quest, and Main Source, emphasizing heavy wordplay and obscure sampling. The Mudkids released their debut CD, "4-Track Mind," in late 1998, followed by "Upward" in 2000, which is often regarded as their best work. "Upward" included the minor college-radio hit "The Ecosystem (Balance Of Nature)." In 2001, they partnered with Stray Records in L.A. to release their third CD, "Higher." After a five-year break from recording, they returned in late 2006 with "Basementality," featuring contributions from the newest member, Skittz (Brian Philps). Their live performances have garnered legendary status locally, now featuring DJ Helicon as well. Russ Johnson is a well-known figure in Indianapolis, balancing multiple roles, including working at Northside News in the Broad Ripple district, serving as a VJ for IMC (Indy's Music Channel), DJing for Hot 96.3
