Mwanamke Mwafrika is a notable figure in the music industry, recognized as part of the world's first widely-known all-female reggae band, African Woman, formed in 1981. The group consisted of seven talented musicians: Shelomi Coke, Diane White, Paulette Coke, Valerie Skeete, Barbara Grossett, and Vyris Edghill. They released their debut album, 'African Woman Abroad,' in 1982, along with two additional tracks that featured on the compilation album 'People Unite' in collaboration with a German label. In 1985, band members Valerie Skeete and Vyris Edghill ventured into a different genre, recording a soul track titled "Watch Yourself" under the name Akabu. This track was produced by Adrian Sherwood and released through the American-based Tommy Boy label. Eventually, the decision was made to merge the two musical projects, blending reggae and soul under the Akabu name.
